MPRRC Race: Kailua Beach Shark Chase Run
About the Race
Kailua Beach Park Boat Ramp.
Kailua, HI US 96734
We will hold this race with rules and procedures in place to comply with current Covid-19 safety guidelines. There will be a live, in-person event and a virtual alternative.
IN-PERSON RACE: The race starts at 7:00 a.m. Check-in will begin at 5:45 a.m. in the park. Pre-registered runners will pick up their bib number at designated tables using social distancing at all times. Face covers or masks are required prior to the race start. If you do not have your own mask or face cover, one will be provided. There is no separate packet pick-up, get your bib number on race morning.
Start: The Shark Chase will begin on the beach at Kailua Beach Park. You will line up in waves at social distance according to your assigned corral. Small flags will be placed six feet apart on the beach to guide you in lining up. Once everyone is lined up, the Shark will be given a small head start, and the first wave will start. We will use a start mat to record your individual start time so that you will have an accurate time for your race no matter where you start in the wave start line-up.
Course: Out and back course. Start near the Kailua Beach Park Boat Ramp. The wave-washed course follows the shoreline to a turnaround point near the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base, then back to the start area. The entire course is on the beach. Shoes are optional – you will probably run through some shallow water depending on the tide and your desire to make a splash. There will be a “shark” to chase – the shark gets a head start. Can YOU beat the shark?
Finish: Awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers only on race day. NOTE: With a wave start, it is possible that the first person to cross the finish line is not the overall winner. Chip time will determine the overall winners and the age group winners. Age group awards may be picked up at the Running Room, 810 Kapahulu Ave., from Monday, July 12, 2021, through Sunday, July 18, 2021.
Talk story after the race! All participants are invited to remain in the park after the race and talk story at social distance. Safe areas will be marked on the grass near check-in for gathering. Beach mats will be provided or you may bring chairs to place in the designated areas. Face covering will be required before and after the race.
If you want one of our unique T-Shirts be sure to click on the drop down box to see other options.
VIRTUAL CHALLENGE: The virtual event may be done anywhere at anytime between Sunday, July 11, 2021, and Sunday, July 18, 2021. It will probably be more fun if done on a beach somewhere but you can run or walk the distance anywhere. Submit your time on the “Results” tab on the RunSignUp race page. Participants in the virtual event are not eligible for overall or age groups awards.
